Re: M$ + Yahoo = Disaster for Y! Users

My humble suggestion, ie. what I do: I have 2 + 1 email accounts (not considering my work account). The two are full fledge email accounts with slightly different targets. The 1 is this one which I use almost solely for mailing list. I have Dovecot + RoundCube + Apache + SSL on my Centos5 home server (no configured sendmail, so no mail sending) I use this for mail archival purposed. It has dozens of folders going to (for now) a max depth of 2 folders. I move mail there one it has been read and dealt with, sorted into appropriate folders. So I have as much space as I need + full access to it. My only concern now is setting up encrypted remote backup. -- Fedora 7 : sipping some of that moonshine ( www.pembo13.com )

I doubt that. ts is a fairly standard encoding, and both VLC and mplayer will open the files - they just don't play well. I tested this with some pretty heavy load in the background, so can't say for sure that they wouldn't play. As I said, I know avidemux can handle even larger .ts files; the question there is if the 32b version can handle them. I've managed to find some lower res versions, so that takes care of the problem, but the question remains. I ordered new RAM today.

Video processing
by Jonathan Hutchins 11 Feb '08

I have some .ts video files that are just under 7 gb in size. They're 1080p HD, and nothing I own appears to want to work with them. VLC and mplayer both seem to freeze on the first frame, avidemux reports it's unable to determine the aspect ratio after trying to index the file, and tovid's idvid returns /usr/bin/idvid: line 261: 16#Stream: value too great for base (error token is "16#Stream") This is on an Athalon 2500 running at 1.8 Ghz with 512 M of ram. What I'm wondering is if I don't have enough ram to handle files this big, or if a 32b processor/OS just isn't capable of it, or if the files themselves are corrupt. I have heard of people handling larger files with avidemux, so I know it's possible. Suggestions?

Anyone on the list have an old copy of MimeSweeper 1.0? Barracuda Networks needs a copy to defend against TrendMicro's obnoxious attack against ClamAV? Thanks, Brian

"Face" support in mail readers
by Kyle Sexton 09 Feb '08

09 Feb '08

Just playing around with Face[1] support in Gnus, and was wondering if anyone else can see the image attached to this message? There are several clients that listed support in 2006, I'm wondering if any more have gotten it. Footnotes: [1] Face is an update to X-Face which allows you to display a picture in the header of your message, http://quimby.gnus.org/circus/face/ -- Thanks, Kyle Sexton

M$ + Yahoo = Disaster for Y! Users
by Julie 08 Feb '08

08 Feb '08

I have soooooo much stuff stored in my many Y! accounts it's not even close to funny! I've had these accounts for YEARS and you know how stuff 'piles up'. I wonder how to go about starting an online 'petition' to Yahoo to "Just say NO! to M$". After all, "it's the _customer_ who is *supposed* to be right!" Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. :) Julie @};- --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.

OT: News about Yahoo and Microsoft, or "Anyone got any more GMail invites?"
by Leo Mauler 07 Feb '08

Saw this on, appropriately, Yahoo News. ----- Microsoft Makes Unexpected $44.6B Offer for Internet Icon Yahoo http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080201/microsoft_yahoo.html ----- And here I was thinking that Yahoo might remain my favorite E-mail provider and webhosting service. Anyone think that my Yahoo webhosting on a Linux server will survive such a buyout? ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Tablets with real video cards?
by cragos＠gmail.com 04 Feb '08

I'm more an AMD man than an Intel man on the desktop, but I'm not willing to go that route on a laptop. That said, though, I am also highly unwilling to buy anything with an Intel/S3/VIA GPU as I may be stuck w/o my gaming rig in the near future. Can anyone recommend a tabletpc w/nvidia gpu & Intel proc that's actually available in US markets? I can't find anything at all, which seems just nuts to me. -Sean
