TOR and Linux -in the real world- on lower end hardware?

The short end of this is a question raised about traveling folks using TOR from Campgrounds on low end hardware. Seems a non-trivial query too as there are a growing number of "Full Timers" that live in mobile housing and are politically desiring to support TOR. The overview of the query comes down to this- NOT needing a "Read the FAQ" storm folks- does anyone here have real hands on experience with TOR at all? Then the next element is running TOR on lower end Linux boxes -under 1 ghz P4's under 1gig ram at all? And if TOR will not be a performance impact on that class of systems- what then of running on Wifi chains of 3 links average? Example of RV park network typical chain being- DSL>Firewall Router>1st air hop>USB "dongle">linux box as BEST case with often several additional "Repeaters" My stepdaughter reports seeing an average of 3 AP chains in typical parks as a real example. ALL this data to ask the question then if TOR is practical for RV based travellers to both use and participate in? -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

Greetings, Any ideas on things (quotes, phrases, images, etc.) you would like to see on printed (silk-screened) t-shirts, but haven't seen elsewhere. My sister-in-law is expanding her t-shirt company online and I thought polling this crowd might get some great ideas. Thanks! Steven

Life with no mail client-here's my comments on how and why.

The last time I used a "mail client" it was for an employee account . And only for company required issues. The experience confirmed the insanity of Outlook. Before that I used PINE running on my AT/286 thru a dial shell session. Which got replaced by webmails beginning with the PRE-M$ incarnation of Hotmail Thence to Operamail as it played nice with both Win and Lin versions of Opera Browser. Currently Gmail also shows me life with no mail client can be easy. Yes, there are some issues of backup and dubious degrees of "privacy decay" have been stated. But since my life is lacking the drama needing worry about privacy in mundane emails?. -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

Hardware for sale - 1U servers and maybe more

I need to sell off some stuff to make a house payment. I need to sell before New Years. Up for sale is a pair of those 1U servers that have been going around for a bit. They're configured with Celeron D 320 2.4GHz CPU on Biostar U8668-D mobos with 80GB IDE drive and 512MB RAM in SuperMicro SC512L-260B 1U cases. I can sell them for $200 each, non-negotiable unless you'd like to give me more for some reason. ;) I also have an old HP Pavillion 4453 with an AMD K6-380 and 6-8GB HDD (I'll check if anyone is interested) with the matching 15" CRT monitor. It's got the stock 64MB DIMM in it, but I have extras so I can throw in a 128MB DIMM or two if interested too. An old Monorail workstation with a Tyan Tigercub 100 ( S1894) and a Celeron 400. I also just put together a tower with a Tualatin P3-S 1.26GHz on a DFI CM33-TL Rev C mobo if there is interest for it (48-bit LBA and USB booting) 512MB w/ 20GB IDE & CD-ROM. The Tualatin would match/beat most early P4 systems and use less power/put out less heat; it would make a fine setup to put a 1U hs/fan on and stick in a 1U case for a low power sever. A question about thinkpad models- T 40, T41 etc

The mind numbing differences between some thinkpad models bears asking the group for info. Which of the thinkpad options or details are most important to seek or avoid? Graphics, the Radio card, screen type etc- my primary uses will be web browsing and music. Ripping a large collection of cd's to either mp3 or .ogg I am not at all a gamer nor do I edit video. hopefully some one will read this before the night's meeting disbands or at breakfast to pick the group mind- budget is $ 4-500 if possible . -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645
