More on monitors

These are all usable, I'm pretty sure, but I'm not gonna put time into testing them. One of them's currently my server monitor, I know it's OK, another was my wife's before she upgraded to a flatscreen. I'd tweak the focus on that if I were going to use it as my main monitor, but it's fine for a console. A third was my desktop, and it needs to have the gain turned up a bit, it's kind of dim. I think the fourth one is the one with the bad power switch (everything else is fine), but as I said I'm not gonna put time into finding out. Anybody who wants 'em can have 'em, if I don't hear by next week I'll take 'em to Surplus Exchange and pay the fee.

Free Monitors

I have four 17" CRT monitors. At least two working well, one might need a power switch, one needs a tune-up (Z adjust). Free to whoever picks up all four.

All-in-one's and Linux?

I'm getting ready to buy another desktop machine, and really like the look of the All-in-one PCs (the iMac clones) such as the Dell XPS One. Does anyone have any experience with these machines and Linux? -- Matthew G. Copple mcopple(a)kcopensource.org

Empathizing and commiserating is exactly how I used to get by with taking hundreds of dollars from drunks while working as a Table Games Dealer at the two casinos I where worked [recursively] AND _kept_ them as regular customers, some of which even _followed_ me to the second casino when I 'moved'! I was told on more than one occasion by more than one person that I was one of the few Dealers, if not the only one, they had that actually treated people like people. Of *course*, in a retail situation, I would use that very same tactic and then once the person calms down, I would then go about finding a solution adding the diversion tactic as one possible solution. @ The whole group. @David Nicol ....& whomever else is interested, This is nothing new. I ran into it way back in 2003. I was applying for a retail position when I was asked how I would handle a person who came into the shop raving mad because of a negative experience with it. I answered that I'd try to calm them down by diverting their attention to something in the shop that was more positive and, therefore, give them a positive experience there to replace the negative one they had felt. I didn't get the J.O.B., I think I was "over qualified". But, several months later they went out of business, anyway. So my feelings weren't all that hurt after I saw that. LOL! Then of course there's the people who are genuinely upset about being treated like stupid, lying, cheating, stealing cattle and have had a negative experience because of some employee, who doesn't give a fig, treating them like lying, cheating, stealing cattle with money to be relieved of. Anyone found a better way to balance it? Can testing alone cover substantive knowledge issues, when forced into a system that doesn't allow you the flexibility to do multiple interviews with multiple themes?

I've been asked this question regularly at job interviews lately and I don't recall getting asked it during prior job search efforts. Have other people been fielding the same question, or am I on some kind of HR "difficult people" watch list? (slight hyperbole) discuss.
