[OT] Assembly and Microcontrollers

Does anyone know of a good kit out there that would enable me to hook a microcontroller board to me computer via some port and then transfer a program written on my computer over to it. I found a kit from Radio Shack that allows it: http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fnam e=CTLG%5F006%5F001%5F003%5F000&product%5Fid=276%2D625 But the programming language it uses is BASIC, which in my opinion is a very ugly language, and not really helpful. I'm hoping to find one that uses either C or Assembly (preferably Assembly, because I don't know how to program in assembly yet) Any ideas? I would prefer a board that is already built, or one with very easy instructions, because I have no idea how to read a schematic yet. I could learn (it's on the list of things to do), but I would prefer to wait, and work with something less expensive my first time out. Ok, Make sense? Anyone know of anything out there? By the way the Freedom of Information Act doesn't entitle you to get information on other people's information such as SSNs or tax returns, unless that person is a public official. On top of which they are "supposed" to black out certain parts of those documents which you can get, like SSN's. Or were you not referring to the FOIA? But what bother's me the most is that counties sell my information to political candidates. But that's another rant. entirely. <snip> Nah, I was giving Allen a ration of dookie but the fact that a lot of Google's servers are over seas does pose an interesting issue, especially when many foriegn countries don't have an privacy regulations. By allowing those governmental agencies to "walk" all over your contitutional rights just because you do not do anything illegal you are, by proxy, stating that you do not care about protecting those rights. KTBG.FM Audio Stream

Well, I got things one step closer, but I still can't get the server to respond to a non-Windows audio client. I did correct the mime type for the ASX script on the main web page, but there's aparantly more to it. So I guess at some point we just cobble together a dedicated streaming server with at least one input and three outputs - two broadband and one dial-up rate streams.

The hardware for two machines will be around $4500. The software vendors that this business uses for accounting and project management only run on Microsoft Windows platforms. Anyway, thought I'd share that with some folks. I talked them into Open Office on the few desktops they bought. :-) Taking time to convert them to OSS.

MyDoom wave wipes out RoadRunner

There was a big wave of MyDoom this morning, and RoadRunner mail servers stopped responding to SMTP (POP still worked). RoadRunner responded by rebooting the servers, but the problem may have been with their routers, or possibly with their DNS (or they may have problems with these services as well). We experienced the same symptom as RR on our Epic Alliance mail server - but only when trying to reach it through RoadRunner - from other sites it responded fine. (Is this off topic? I couldn't decide. RoadRunner used to run Microsoft mail servers. Epic runs some sort of Sun product; I run various servers including Microsoft, RedHat, and Gentoo.)

The only PIC controller kits I've seen are either PIC BASIC or PIC ASSEMBLER. I know it is also possible to do PIC C. I would definitely recommend using the PIC BASIC because there is a lot of pre-written code that can be easily gotten in PIC BASIC. Gmail and Opera?

Howdy - I recently took up one of the lug'ers on their kind offer for a Gmail account. Using it right now, as a matter of fact. Uncertain if it will become my email of preference, however. When I try to access from Opera 7.54 (under Win) identifying as MSIE, it barfs on no ActiveX being enabled. When I have it tell sites I'm Mozilla, it "loads" the page, but it is entirely blank. Anyone have a solution to this? Later on, I'll boot into Linux and try Opera there but don't know what more to expect. If I cannot reach Gmail from Opera, I may find that to be a major problem as I am currently enjoying the latest version of Opera (with M2 working in both Win and Linux, with Prefs man-handled to use one common email location from both environments).
