I wasn't going to do this, but you struck a nerve. I call BS. Over and over again, I have pointed you to DamnSmall Linux (DSL). http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ At the risk of sounding like a broken record, they have "50MB of Penguin Power." There should be no barrier to entry for a user getting DSL. It is so small that anyone can download it. Hell, Microsoft distributes OS patches that are four times larger! One guy even got DSL running on a 486 with >32MB of RAM. The only barrier you might bring up is that if you still don't have a CD burner, even though they are now mainstream. You could always get someone to burn one for you or order a CD. Or you can run embedded from within Windows, using Qemu or VMWare. They even have a method (called poorman's install) that uses a Tom's Rootboot floppy to boot the PC, download and install the DSL image to PC. So please stop telling people that some old piece of crap PC or laptop won't work with Linux. You can get even the most basic system up and usable. If that doesn't work, try Debian and for pete's sake ask for help and come to a meeting with your old crappy hardware. It can be made to work. Kepht still uses a 386 with Debian!! And to Luke: So what if your little blinky lights on your shiny new laptop don't work. Same goes for the 3d hardware acceleration. http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html Keep writing letters to the hardware manufacturer to get Linux support, whether it is GPL drivers or scanner software that works with *nix. Tell em you are using their hardware in the hopes that they will see a Linux market growing and give it more support or tell em you are not buying their piece of crap and you are telling 15 friends not to buy it either since they don't fully support Linux. But for gosh sakes do something besides bitch about it and spread inaccurate information. Same goes for the rest of you. Think for more than five minutes before spewing on the intricacies of Linux and its Libertarian/Commun/Social/Agrarian/Anarch/Darwin/Optim-ism. And if you didn't laugh at that last line, then you don't know me well enough. Come up and introduce yourself at the next LUG meeting. Jhutchins, read some manual pages before trying stuff. I know you immediately throw away stereo instructions, but try reading to find the answer for once. Luke and Chuck need to take a few college courses on government and history as they are a bit mixed up. Take Jared with you, he'll entertain the prof. Monty, you are awesome. Data Integrity: how do you define it and how do we secure it?

I was following some recent threads in conversation both on and off list that directed me to rethink a few things. All of them concern a concept best described as Data Integrity. That can be the mundane routine of backups kept dispersed for disaster immunity to the securing those backups from loss. Loss again can be both the "destruction" of a copy or it's disclosure to undesired persons. While the majority of "us" are pretty much able to attempt self protection from both- what of the masses? How many folks trusting their computers? Userdata integrity is currently an afterthought or just ignored. That ignorance seems deeply pervasive to a fault. With the exception of obfuscated data used only to convict but not examined to exonerate. Before flaming me for hype- read the papers! Search for "forty years"; and pornography in school Several of us KCLUG mambers allowed access to the unaltered records might have seen justice done.Instead ? We possibly have wrongly convicted an innocent teacher. For both trusting the computer she used and following rules. She was admonished to never unplug or turn off "the computer" So pornographic popups were seen by students absent any PROVED witting intent or even provable neglect of duty.. And why is this on us? Because the so-called expert witnesses failed to even LOOK for rational explanations such as adware or other malicious code! So a schoolteacher was denied fair trial based on all evidence. Folks- I submit a bedrock ethical guideline of conduct for persons and code handling user's data is long overdue! Who is up to write one? The appliance operators of our world have not a clue to guard themselves. Yes, the more educated folks do get some clue but they are a minority. WE are the de facto adhocracy to possibly offset the dismal reality. And dismal barely serves to cover the best estimate my admittedly poor experience gives of how bad it is for our security. All of what I have said goes to lay out something that WE are possible oversensitive alarmists about and the public at large knows nothing of. Repetition is again not by accident, Nor do I suspect is much of the inherent insecurity of our world's data structures. Oliver North proved the mistaken faith in delete meaning a real erasure as being a Really Wrong Explanation. Or lack of explanation perhaps? *Some things are not defensible by blaming incompetence over malice* So I ask respectful comment on what issues in protecting the integrity of "user's data" can be posted to the ledgers of stupid Vs intentional faults. And how we can fix them. Or mitigate the unfixables.

You write "Linux can be made to work better if you are lucky or a guru." So become a guru. This would be a valid criticism if it were difficult to become a Linux guru. It just takes time and curiousity. A farmer feeds his cattle hay. Hay is hay. There are types of hay, alfalfa, brome, sudan, millet, cane, sorghum, etc. to name a few. A herds health is dependent upon not from feeding the cattle hay, but by feeding the cattle different types of hay. An OS is an OS. Destroying one OS in favor of another does not provide OS diversity. If (competing OS) is a tree, and people are attacking the branches, and not the roots, some trees will grow back. If you attack the roots and kill the tree, then you might feel you have succeeded. Linux in it's current state however, is like a tree with roots, but with no branches. A tree will not grow properly if it never has branches. Branches as in software choices. Currently I don't know of a way to put AutoCad (in it's updated form) on Linux. There are many commercial software packages for windows where there is no equivalent for linux. Cutting down the tree in your back yard on the west side of your house next to the patio window without having another in it's place is like destroying on OS in favor of another. Leave the OS in front of the patio window, it will die in it's own time. Instead plant another to replace it and concentrate on norishing it and it's relationships with other companies. Linux needs to quit worrying about "attacking" roots and begin worrying more about why it has no branches. (01/17/07) Socialism masquerades as libertarianism until it has power, and then it drops the niceties used to convince the masses that something positive is happening, when in truth, power was consolidating. I used to be a Libertarian until I realized I was merely a tool in the hands of the socialists, who are a tool in the hands of the secret organizations, who are everywhere and nowhere. It is nice that a Libertarian newspaper is talking about Linux, and there was one good observation made in the quote above, but they are merely using Linux to advance their own agenda, not for its original purpose, which Linus made clear early on: Joy. Linus was having fun, and still is. Libertarians and socialists are grumpy because they have no power in a Republic, and they have axes to grind. I wholeheartedly agree that Linux is _not_ anarchist, and would have written Jeremy Fowler's argument if he hadn't. Linux is very hierarchical. Thus my concern is not for where it is today, but where it will go after Linus passes away as an old man. The real danger is in something as powerful as Linux being controlled by someone who is as powerful as Linus Torvalds... but has no joy. The salient point in the article quoted above is that ANYONE can study the code and become an expert in it. This makes it a meritocracy. Meritocracy demands that its ruling class be an expert in something other than ruling, which makes it apolitical in nature. Politicians continually try, but fail, to control it. Linux is a rigorously structured meritocracy of joy. -Jared

I like Jeremy's argument quite well, and find it to be more lucid and mature than yours. I'll be bringing bread to dinner. Homemade. Kneaded it myself. Do not be angry at the Libertarians. Do not be angry at the Socialists. Do not be angry at the Anarchists. Do not be angry at the Republicans or the Democrats. Do not be angry at Microsoft or Linux, Buddha or Christ.
