Anyone on the list have a laptop for sale that can run Beryl etc?

Simply put, I have some capital to buy a laptop. I would if possible spend my money in our community so to speak. Prices and required specs are flexible but. minimally I need to run Linux and XP: as dual boot, have at least 1 hour battery, internal cd burner and reasonably professional external appeearance for air travel. The IED look is a non starter then, Beryl seems the heaviest app I would run except whatever it takes to drive a scan/fax/prind device of some sort. So what's in play ? I don't know who from kclug is attending ITEC, I'm not. But whoever is may wish to bring a box, and some kclug info. Kim is speaking after the keynote. I don't think KCLUG is doing anything other than manning a booth. Hey, long story short, I'm considering selling my PCs, and I want to see first if any of you are interested, and second how much you pay/think they're worth (in case none of you want them and I put them on CL or ebay or something) First one, my old computer: It's a medion brand computer, premade so I'm not sure of motherboard. 2.4GHz P4 processor 512MB RAM (DDR something) nVidia GeForce 6200LE (EVGA I think) 80GB HDD DVD/CD RW drive DVD (?) drive also has a floppy drive, a few different types of flash drives, and an ethernet card (mainboard ethernet doesn't work for some reason) Second, my new computer: a bit of backstory, I actually purchased the parts for this in March, put it together, didn't work, half a dozen RMAs later I finally get a working CPU, GPU, and mbrd, but then I find my old computer's monitor doesn't work with it. Fedora as a webserver

Playing around in my spare time I have been trying to get fedora 7 to do the php includes, but for some reason I missed something and it not getting the desired results, anybody have a clue what I might have missed? Also, what steps to I need to take to have my Fedora 7 machine acts as a web server

Recommends for a Linux laptop- preferably an abuse resistant model.

I do not need the full milspec explosion/waterproof models.. Just hopefully minor drop and knocked over drink resistance to protect my $500 ballpark investment. Much as I have been looking at CF-51 etc semirugged or the harder cased CF-71 family variants the $ to hardness trade offs seem dicey. As in perhaps I just should get a $399 low end from somewhere new and get the no quibbles even broken screen warranty . My average use profile is web browsing, light commercial use of OpenOffice and some music playing. I do not need shooter game frame rates etc. Battery life and stability are more important to me as examples. Beryl would be nice but not essential as a target max demand application. DVD/CD burner is a minimum optical drive. Within that overview recommends will be appreciated SO folks, if you were going to spend $500 on a new or Ebay sourced laptop what would it be?

"Look at any public space in your community where you can start to create a hacker space." Almost all the public hacker spaces created have failed because the people who started the project burned out from the drama of it all. And there's the risk of surprise expenses - holes punched or insurance costs. "Noboby's going to do the community organizing for you," says Farr. Some of the things that come from hackerspaces are fascinating - Lara Sobel's RFID shielding pouches wallets, made from trash and essentially an open source project. "I posted instructions for making them online so anyone can do it," Sobel says. "I learned how to fuse the trash bags and defeat RFID readers from available information and I'm sharing how to do it." Besides fused trashbags, Lara uses aluminum can bits to provide shielding whether the pouch is open or closed. They Velcro shut and fit credit cards, licenses and passports. ITEC Software distribution (Again)

I thought I might revive this thread to mention that Fedora 8 is scheduled to be released on November 8th, the second day of ITEC. If you're still looking for software to hand out, Fedora 8 will be freshly 'released' that morning at 9AM central time. If you brought a laptop and a spindle of DVD-Rs, you'd have a chance to start burning as the doors open (assuming they have a big connection there). On 9/28/07, Monty J.
