reading Amiga file system with Linux
by gary hildebrand 16 Feb '07

16 Feb '07

Back when I got started, this was part of the Kernal build, if you compiled it yourself. Most (probably all) of the distros don't have it built-in, and I wonder if the latest kernal even supports it any more? Has anyone heard of a utility that would read AFFS 880k disks, and maybe HDs, that might be out there? That would make installing Debian Linux on my beloved A3000 and A2500 more useful. No problem with CD's, as they are all ISO-9660. Gary Hildebrand St. Joseph, MO

by Russ Starr 15 Feb '07

15 Feb '07

Tonight, we'll be having our February KCSUG meeting. We'll have this at the usual place; the KC Public Library in the Plaza. Complete details can be found on our meetings page at: http://www.kcsnort.org/index.php/Meetings We'll meet from 7-9pm in the small meeting room. The venue is located at 4801 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64112. Last time, there were a couple people from other similar local user groups that seemed to enjoy it. If you can't make it on time, no worries. We usually go out and have a drink at the Peanut down the street after words for those that just can't stop talking security. :) Thank you, -Russ

Live meeting software for Linux questions
by Oren Beck 14 Feb '07

14 Feb '07

What Linux software can be recommended for live meetings? Ranging from the simplest "remote family meeting" to elaborate stuff for perhaps - the RMS remote lecture to KCLUG? And related to that possible things such as remote meetings of KCLUG with OTHER related groups. The past archives were and are a good concept, but the real time interactive aspect seems worth exploring. "The next best thing to being there"

root on Mac
by lowell 14 Feb '07

14 Feb '07

Folks: A friend works on Macs exclusively and an announcement of an M$ Word vulnerability went across one of the sites she visits. This engendered a discussion of his habit of always working with administrative rights , and separate root accounts and being able to "su -" in a terminal. Then I (we) remembered that one must "verify..." and then "repair permissions" on a regular basis, even when working with administrative permissions all the time. I recall hearing that that is a common failing in the recent MacOS's (X.*) I remember some people on this list speaking of working with or using Mac's; would anyone care to comment on this situation, i.e. working as root (that's what it amounts to) and still having permission problems...

I propose we have a fundraiser: http://puggy.symonds.net/~kalyan/rms-letter.txt None of us are very good with money, or we wouldn't be geeks, so I'll be brief: does anyone have $5,000 to spare? Fundraiser concluded. Moving on to new business... -Jared

nfs weirdness
by David Nicol 10 Feb '07

10 Feb '07

my server nfs-exports / to certain peers. / is ext3fs. There is a mount point /bulky which is reiserfs. changes occuring on /bulky are not reflected in the nfs clients' views. nfs has been shut down and restarted with no effect. The clients see a picture of /bulky that is very out of date. Anyone know what might be happening?
