Fwd: [DISCUSS] Petreley calls for action

Do any of you guys know where Nick Petreley came from? --Don Ellis ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Craig Buchek <...> Date: Nov 15, 2006 4:38 PM Subject: Re: [DISCUSS] Petreley calls for action To: discuss(a)sluug.org That reminds me. Does anyone have any connections w/ Nick Petreley? In a recent article, he talked about flying back to visit Missouri. I was wondering if it was through St. Louis or Kansas City. If anyone knows, and he frequently comes through St. Louis, I figure we could invite him to speak at a meeting the next time he's in town. Thanks, Craig ------- St. Louis Unix Users Group - http://www.sluug.org/ To unsubscribe from the SLUUG discussion mailing list, send a message to discuss-request(a)sluug.org with the word 'unsubscribe' as the body

Linux migration study
by Buchen, Amy 13 Nov '06

13 Nov '06

Hi all, I'm conducting a study for a Harvard Business School professor on the costs associated with migrations between different Linux distributions, and I am looking for companies that have undergone a migration like this. Does anyone have any contacts for IT professionals at large companies (500+ full time employees) who have migrated from one Linux distribution to another? I can provide an honorarium of $200 to the company IT individuals willing to participate in the study. It will involve a 30 to 45-minute phone conversation. I am not looking for external consultants who have done migrations, but specifically someone who works for a large company that has undergone a Linux migration. Thank you for any advice or assistance. Amy abuchen(a)key-inc.com

Joe, I don't know where UPS mis-dropped it, but there was an empty space slot in the computer. I noticed that there was no DVD-ROM Drive. Did you ship it with one? Lawrence Freenet
by Leo Mauler 10 Nov '06

Lawrence Freenet is going city-wide on March 1st. http://www.lawrencefreenet.org/ They use wireless networking to cover Lawrence in Internet service, though you can currently only attach to the service through a wireless-to-wired conversion box. They have plans for free WiFi in Downtown Lawrence. Home service costs between $20 and $35 a month, installation is $200 to $0 (depending on length of contract), though low-income families meeting their income guidelines can receive free Internet service with free installation. Part of the program involves handing out a free computer to low-income families, often the same ones who are receiving the free Internet service. I'm suspicious from the costs charged to paying Internet subscribers (as well as the installation fees and contract lengths) that someone has gone all-Windows in the choice of operating system. The free computers are all donated legacy systems, put together by volunteers. Software choices (in addition to bureaucratic costs) could be a major factor in increasing the Lawrence Freenet's costs in their free computer program. From links on the Lawrence Freenet website, their choices appear to be Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. Since the major backer is UNI Computers (http://www.unicomputers.com/) and they make their money off services to Windows users, I'm thinking that the money-saving benefits of Linux aren't being used. Since the broadband connection is a wireless-to-wired conversion box, there will be no issues with Linux wireless NICs as the only connection required is a wired NIC. Develop the system appropriately and most home users won't notice the difference, though to make things easier donating a CUPS compatible printer as well would be appropriate. I tried to join KULUA to talk to them about it, but I'm still waiting on list approval. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Sponsored Link Get an Online or Campus degree Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's - in less than one year. http://www.findtherightschool.com

Once again our wierd "reply" setting catches someone unawares: ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Re: KCLUG subdivisions Date: Tuesday 07 November 2006 01:51 From: Bradley Hook <bhook(a)kssb.net> To: Jonathan Hutchins <hutchins(a)tarcanfel.org> > I agree with this idea. > I just joined the list a few days ago, but I just wanted to toss out the > idea that I may have a location to host some KCLUG meetings. -------------------------------------------------------- I think if the meetings moved around, we'd probably get more people attending over-all. I know I don't want to deal with $7/hr parking downtown to meet in the glided and book-less library, but I did make it to a meeting when they were at the FOSS training center on State Line.

KCLUG subdivisions

If you go the next block over, there is a monthly pay lot between bldgs, but you can park there for free at night and there is an alleyway that leads to the street that the Library is on. It is well lit and safe. When we had to meet at different locations after the old Power & Light Bldg. and when the Old library closed, there was a lot of confusion about the meetings and the details. Everything seemed up in the air till the last minute. Talk about a way to break up a group. People have a hard time following the details on the kclug.org website as it is. BUT, we could announce a meetup type extra meeting. If someone wants to host it, have DEFINITE plans, time, place, directions, room reservation with power, tables, Ethernet, whatever you need to have. Get it squared away and post a message to the list and to IRC announcing it and just do it. If you build it, they will come. If it is more convenient to some that can't make a reg. meeting, they will come. Call it KCLUG Annex or Auxiliary meeting or something. >-----Original Message----- >From: On Behalf Of Jonathan Hutchins > >On Monday 06 November 2006 21:56, Christopher A. Bier wrote: >Ok.
