Um, make.profile is a directory, so nano won't show anything
in it if you try to edit it as a file (but it doesn't complain,
either, unfortunately).  Is there anything in the make.profile
directory?

I believe that make.profile should be included in the tarball.

I haven't had this particular problem. :)  Have you tried jumping
directly into a stage 3 tarball?  I did that most recently without
problems.
