Apparently the new programs are not being added to the start menus. I
think that Star Office is added to KDE's menus but not Gnome's. To run
Star Office go to whatever directory you installed it in and type
"soffice" to run it. The binary on the acrobat reader is called
"acroread", which should be in your path.

KDE seems to be generally better at adding programs to the panel than
gnome, but at a shell prompt you can run any programs that you have on
your computer. The "locate" program will help you find things that are
not in your path, like "locate soffice" should tell you where any files
that include the string "soffice" are located.

The command line is your friend. If you'd rather mouse-click to start
things, once you find the binary that launches the program you can drag
and drop it from a file manager onto your desktop. Also,
/usr/share/doc/<program name> might contain information.
