cdrecord is failing with the below errors: could someone help with this?

uname output:
Linux 2.6.2 #1 SMP Mon Feb 16 11:18:56 CST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux

scanbus output:
scsibus0:
         0,0,0 0) ' ' 'COMBO-52X16 ' '1.83' Removable CD-ROM

Burning worked a few weeks ago and it is a new cdrwdrive. The same
results occur for the many disks tried (CD-R and CDRW). I do not
remember if it was working on kernel 2.6.1 or 2.6.2 in the past. I have
done several apt-get upgrades since then also. Mounting a cd for read
works fine. I have tried cdrecord with ide-scsi mapping and without
(using cdrecord's ATAPI)
