very strange DNS problem, making me lose mymind

what name server is being used by the host program when it fails on a 
lookup?

what is in /etc/resolve.conf?

what are you using progr/ver for dns services?

how is your internal dns server setup?  did you remember to tell your 
dns server use your isp dns server if it cannot find a host?
