Well, I don't know if its actually happened (though
Galileo definitely got lifetime house arrest over
"heretical astronomy").  

As for being "a bad thing if it did", I suppose that's
true too, at least in the case of the astronomers who
stripped Pluto of its status as a planet.  :(
