The gentleman who wrote APL, Kenneth Iverson, recently died. (He went
quietly, while at his computer, working at programming)

Over the last 20 years or so, he had shifted his focus to creating a new
language, J, which doesn't require a special keyboard.  
www.Jsoftware.com has a downloadable compiler, loads of tutorials, free
as in beer (not open source, different business model) and a very active
mailing list.

Also www.aplusdev.org has an Open Source implementation of APL.
Apparently APL has survived in the financial services niche.
