I gave that ModeLine a try.  No dice, same problem.

Thanks for a new idea to try though.  Its difficult to run "xvidtune"
when the window looks like it is moving very fast up the screen and
wrapping around to the bottom again.  I wish I could figure out some
really awful low bpp screen resolution which does work, so I can run
xvidtune with some hope of changing the settings.

Hmmm.  xf86config mentions 4bpp.  Hmmm.

During Mandrake installs, you got to "test" XWindows setup for about
fifteen seconds with some part of the installer.  Was that a separate
program or part of the Installer?  I'd like to be able to make XWindows
exit on its own after a short period, just to speed up the
experimentation.  Try something new, run "15-Second-X", see if it works,
and if not exit on its own and let me back into the text editor to try
something else.
