$49 and I can get well over a mile range with this antenna at one end.  
With a pair of these, you may be able to go several miles with your 
typical cheap wireless cards.  No amplifiers necessary.  Easy to aim and 
setup.  Small and concealable, so these shouldn't be an eyesore.
