I agree with the rest of your reply; I would like to add a response to
this statement, though. Generally speaking, make modules_install should
never screw up your module directory. Inside /lib/modules/*/, each
directory is for each major kernel release so there should be no
conflict between _major_ releases. OTOH, IIRC, modules_install doesn't
delete the files that are already there; so, you may have some binary
drivers or drivers from other sources floating around in that directory.
I can't image how their presence might mess up any of the kernel's own
modules, though -- provided that the modules aren't replacing modules
provided by the kernel. That would be one hell of a bad distribution
practice, though. I'd like to have words with a package that overwrites
the kernel's own modules with its version. :)
