Only 2.6 supports SATA, USB2 and AGP 8X on that MoBo.

No preference. Whatever DDR matches your FSB.

Both ATI and NVidia's Linux drivers have known issues. ATI currently has the
better hardware. If you game occasionally, you need a card with vertex and
pixel shading pipelines. I would recommend any of the low end 9000 series
ATI's.

Yes. If you compile things, anyways. Since you're in to Java, the extra
responsiveness would be nice. I can /almost/ not tell that I'm using a
Java-based text editor for my web site work. ;)

My specs:

Gigabyte VIA KT600 (on board: audio, NIC, USB2, SATA)
Athlon XP Barton 2600+
512MB 400mHz DDR
ATI Radeon 7500
2 UDMA133 HD's totaling 140 GB
52x CD-Burner
2x DVD Burner
TV & Radio Tuner
SB Live! Audio
All USB Input Devices
2 Additional Ether (National Semi & 3COM)
Internal Pink Cathode Light for Pissing Contests ;)

I don't know if the on board audio and NIC work since I don't use them.
Everything else is fine. Kernel 2.6-test9/XFree86-4.3.99.15.
