weird su problem

Is it possible that someone gained access to your box, and replaced the 
normal 'su' with a backdoor'd one?  Maybe try re-installing it off the CD...

Also, su doesn't echo characters back (or replace them with stars), so you're 
sorta typing blind 'till you hit enter.  <insert basic password troubleshooting 
here> - try one-fingering it, checking caps, etc...
