restarting the network

Well, in RH, you can do "service network restart", which will 
re-configure interfaces *AND* routes.  If you're careful, you can even 
do this over SSH and not loose your network connection (assuming, of 
course, the box will still have the IP you're talking to after the 
re-config).

I'd suggest digging through your init scripts and find out what is 
configuing your routes...a grep of the rc.? and init scripts for the 
filename of whatever configures routing in suse would probably be a good 
start...
