Bad metaphor.

Studebakers were very good technology in their day, but from a "fringe"
company. They also tended to out-live other brands, and therefore there
were old, outdated Studebakers still on the road when the other brands had
long since rolled over to new models.

Edsels were great technology, but ahead of their time and did not appeal to
the car-buying public.

AOL has always been poor technology selling air to the unenlightened masses.
