job search

Literacy is important. It is the sign of a disciplined, vibrant, and
educated mind. 60% of college grads enter the job market without the
basic skills they need to write a simple position paper or to clearly
articulate an idea.

It is a simple choice:

Do you want to be in the top half or the bottom half of wage scale?

Communication is a major part of EVERY human endeavor, if you can't
communicate clearly in written or verbal genres, the only avenue left is
violence. (That will get you a long stay in the county lockup with a guy
named Tiny that thinks you got a really pretty mouth.)

It is actually an insult to send someone poorly written or mis-spelled
correspondence. When you send someone a note or a letter, you are
asking for them to invest their time and attention to read, and
hopefully, ACT on the contents.

If it is not worth your time to make sure the note or letter is clear,
concise and does not contain any spelling or grammatical errors, why is
it worth their time to read it?

In fact, it takes the reader longer to read a poorly written letter than
it does to read a good one, because the reader has to keep stopping and
going back to reread grammatically incorrect passages to try to
determine the true meaning.

Here is an example related to computers, I worked with a lady that had
been promoted from computer operator to system programmer. Her written
communication skills may have been acceptable as an operator, but they
were substandard as a system programmer. She would send us instructions
like,
"Please remember too input the correct date when preforming an IPL!"

and then she would get upset when we didn't understand or properly
follow her instructions.

I don't know about must of you, but while I have done literally
thousands of IPL's, not counting the 'doze three finger salute, I have
NEVER had to PRE-FORM an IPL. Hmmm, must be something knew!

I usually just pressed the button and typed in the date and load
parameters, so it didn't register to me that the instructions even
applied to me. I just mentally filed away the fact that you ALSO had to
enter the date for a PRE-FORMed IPL.

It wasn't until a couple of weeks later that I asked about the
'PRE-FORMed' IPL process that I understood the point of her note, which
was asking us to please double check that the date was typed correctly
before we hit enter!
