[OT] Linux and chatting and M$

I have a friend who wants me to MSN message with them. Not
ever having had a need to use any IM/ICQ clients, I am wondering
what MSN is using and is it possible to connect to M$ ICQ/IM/whatever it
is?
Excuse me if this is a stupid question, but google wasn't any help to
me.
I figured there's probably at least on Luggite savvy enough to answer
this.
