tape backups

Okay... 
run the following command with no errors.
tar -cvf /dev/ht0 /home 
this of course backs up /home to the tape
running less -f /dev/ht0 confirms the data is there.
but for some reason when I run
tar -xvf /dev/ht0 
it will start restoring /home but stops with this
error
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
Now if it creates the backup fine why does it error on
extraction?
