VMWare followup

Thanks to those who replied. I found the answer digging around
the support site for VMWare. I won't go into the details here,
but if anyone is interested I'd be glad to share the link:

Go to the "installing VMWare tools for Linux guests" 
This enables you to use X...before that it couldn't access the display.
