I got sound to work under KDE but never under Gnome unless I went into dev
and recreated symbolic links to the devices in devsound (I think, or was
it devaudio?).  I would always loose those links on reboot, and I never
dissected the Mandrake/RedHat boot process far enough to discover what was
rewriting the dev directory.

Mandrake 8.3 is current, it may address that problem.
