What tape drive would you recommend?

If you want cheap and _incredibly_ noisy, get Travan.

If you want silent operation, and are willing to pay some $$$, get DAT or
DLT.  Note that typically DAT/DLT drives are higher-end, so they may be
more reliable.

You can get DAT drives cheap sometimes at Surplus Exchange.  I've
personally bought 2 of them there for $10 each.
