I think I can finally pat myself on the back for this one -- whew!   What
an experience!   Thanks to everyone who sent along tips/tricks.  The book
text helped a lot.  I finally decided to use SWAT to configure things and
after some fiddling here and there I managed to get it to run.   I decided
to be brave and try it from scratch on my other Linux box and managed to
get it running (with SWAT) on the first try.
