I'm with Jason here.  It's been my experience that replacing dvd and 
cdrw drives tends to break the scsi emulation in the "popular" 
distro's.  Check your boot log to see if scsi emulation is in fact 
loading at boot.  Then Jason already offered to help you fix it.  :)
