Volume Control Applet

For some reason Mandrake 9.1 installed without a volume control applet for 
kpanel - something that seems obvious and essential to me.  I tracked down an 
application called "knob", but the RPM is linked to an NVIDIA GLX library 
which conflicts with my non-NVIDIA card. 
 
Any suggestions on what applet to search for?
