Gnome malfunction

Hey all...I'm just wondering if anyone can help me figure out a Gnome
issue. I just installed RH9 and used KDE as the startup desktop. I
wanted to look at Gnome as well, but when I started a gnome session, I
got about a half dozen error message boxes telling me it couldn't load
configuration settings for gnome-panel. The details box showed error
after error contacting omg.org/CORBA/ configuration server. I have no
idea what this means, or how to correct it. The only clue I have about
CORBA is that its some kind of programming environment or something. I
didn't know gnome had to contact an external server to set up the
environment. 

Any clues?

Also, Xconfigurator is gone, and when I tried to install the rpm for
it, I ran into a bunch of dependencies, that when I tried to install
the packages to satisfy, I got conflicts with already installed
packages. (I was trying to install Xconfigurator and linuxconf). Is
this just an issue with new releases of RedHat, that you "take what you
get" and don't try to install what you know? It certainly makes me feel
impotent, thinking I'm starting to get a handle on some of the
utilities, and having them disappear. I don't always have a lot of
extra time to kill searching for documentation and experimenting trying
to make things work. Frustrating, very frustrating.
