I think your problem is the HP Burner.  I've had tons of problems on the
three or four I have worked on.   One a coworker tried under Linux would not
work at all and the others under Windows 98/2k/xp had driver problems,
burner software problems, burned coasters everthing.   The only way to make
them work even part of the time was to use the HP burning software that came
w/ the drive and load all three or four drivers in a specific order.
