Several have already suggested the Rute Users book. Excellent but not
focused on a single distro which might be better for a newbie.

You might also choose Slackware as a distro and:
http://www.slackware.com/book/

as your guide.

Or, for another more general source:
http://www.dsl.org/cookbook/cookbook_20.html

The reason I suggest several is that each author explains what is
important to them in different ways and reading more than one can
clarify difficult to understand topics or give insight into something
not noticed by another author.

You are entering a continually expanding universe of computing.
Nobody will force you to do anything, all paths are available for
free.

Do not think of this as a major commitment but as the first step of of
an endless exploration. Take any path which amuses you.

If the path before you seems too hard or ceases to become fun then
you should turn to something else. Choose another distro, study
networking and firewalling for a while, take up sound and video editing, ...

If you have any more questions or anything neat to tell about we are
here and we love to learn about new things or solve puzzles.
