Ubuntu would be a great choice as you can find a lot of help online and it
is usually spelled out in a way people for people who may not have as much
linux experience.

MySQL will work fine for you with Ubuntu. I use CentOS as one of my servers
at my work and it works great for it, but for home use, I would stick with
Ubuntu.
