Question for other gmail users (filtering out emails by sender)

Anyone know of a way to use gmail's filter system to filter out emails
from someone without filtering an entire thread? For example, using
filter "from:moran at holyshithowdidhegetintocollege.edu" would also
block any thread that person had replied to, or significant amounts of
it anyway. Is there any way to use it to only block their specific
emails, but keep the rest of the thread intact?
