Feeling stupid now (was Upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10, now resolution stuck at 1600x1200)

That was doing by hand what my tip of using "dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg" would have done through "official" software with a text
interface.  You can select and change most of the modeline stuff you
want, if you want, or you could just select the resolutions you want.
Also, by using the dpkg system it automatically makes a
datestamp-named backup for the file.
