The current "shrinkwrap appliance operator" best of breed is this:

http://www.neatreceipts.com/

It earns that niche mostly due to near seamless integration with a software
bundle.
Sadly however-the bundle is all Windows, and closed source to my current
information. That last part about the software bundle- Scanners above or
bleow certain price points are "you get what you pay for" and then better
or worse in nonlinear progression both directions bad to good. A sub-$200
scanner Vs a Canon "integrated document unit for $5500 both at the end of
the day still turn paper into digital captures.

The MAJOR differences being in time, sanity and total cost of
ownership/operation..

When you consider the bottom line as total costs to own and operate-then you
can compare hardware and software merits. I admit bias towards the extremes
having lived with both. And in due disclosure- "paperless" should more aptly
be dubbed as "paper lessening"

Later today I will explain what I have worked with that did and not work-and
why.

But look in the meantime at the Neat receipts package for a "what the
mundanes use" item.. And at the upper end- Canon's CD-4070NW

Microfilm enhanced models start at 15K...
