Screen Goes Black after running Xserver

On ubuntuforums.org there seems to be a high incidence of problems
with ATI in the latest release, on both PC and PPC.  It's also known
to show up on Debian too.  I don't remember the specifics, but it
seems DRI might have problems with the ATI drivers.
