Now you have three driver layers - USB, Serial-on-usb, and modem.

That said, I run a four-modem Hylafax server with a USB serial adapter
that's supported, and it (usually) works just fine.  I can't get minicom
to talk to any of the serial ports except the first one, but hylafax,
getty, and agetty work fine.
