Mandrake 10 should have an optional Pentium II SMP kernel available as an RPM.  

SuSE, on the other hand, defaults to SMP support (and RAID and everything else 
you can think of) in their standard kernel.

Really, on a P II 450 you should be able to configure the kernel, start the 
compile, and just go do something else for a while.
