Already done.  you can take any Knoppix derivative and boot from usb. 
BUT, I have only done it w/ DamnSmall and with a boot floppy that hands 
off to the USB stick.  My old stuff won't boot to USB on its own.  Just 
like some CD-ROM drives won't boot an OS, older hardware is not able to 
boot to USB.  One year old stuff can though.
