harddrive failing? how to test it?

You're on the right track.  Since it's obvious that your drive has SMART
already, you can use smarttools to get more information out of it.  It
looks like it might be over heating or unable to correct sectors.  These
are usually an indicator of a dying drive.  Linux Journal had a good
article on SMART about a year ago.

This should give you quite a lot of information.
smartctl -a /dev/hd?
