Looking in /lib/modules/.../drivers/video, there are a number of framebuffer 
modules depending on which chipset you have.  Given that the driver for X 
doesn't appear to work properly, what are the chances that the framebuffer 
drivers are good?  Anyway, if you can figure out which module to use, no need 
to recompile the kernel.
