There is an O'Reilly book on the subject that friends have told me
favoriable reviews of. I can't remember the name. Like, _Building
Websites with PHP and MYSQL_.

Those same friends are getting disillusioned with PHP, though. I can't
speak from experience, but from what I hear, there was a lot of hope for
PHP5 and everyone seems disappointed. OTOH, if you want to pick up
something in a day, PHP is still your man. Both Python and Ruby can be
used for web developement these days. Their power (more so Python due to
its larger modules archive) far outweights PHP -- DBI modules exist for
both. If you have an opportunity, check them out.
