Yes, it sounds like mirrorselect would be great.  I was only able a few 
times to get a mandrake system to update without locking up.  Once they 
got into 8.0 versions it was impossible.  Then I couldn't find a mirror 
that even worked.  I had better luck w/ RedHat, Gentoo and now Debian.
