It was an unfortunate side effect of the way in which Thunderbird
handles plain-text mail by default. I've helped him fix it. It won't
happen again. As for the pipe characters, GPG requires them for quoting
in place of chevrons. It has something to do with ASCII armored
encryption line breaks. His messages will look like this one from now on.
