You shouldn't be disappointed with Bryants...lots of flavor there, even
without the food.  :-)

For your future reference, after you move here, I'd have to say Gates isn't as
bad as the two fellows below would have you believe. Nearly any place in
town that puts out a sign saying "BBQ" is worth trying at least once.

A few other notables that nobody else mentioned:

* Jack Stack BBQ

Probably my favorite in the whole area, if I HAD to pick. The coolest one is
in the old Freight House district behind Union Station, but the best one is
the one way down in Martin City, at 135th and Holmes. The one at 95th and
Metcalf is nice but has a really long wait, although it's quick enough for
take-out.

* Zarda BBQ

We had a KCLUG meeting at the Zarda at 87th and Quivira in Overland Park, when
maddog came to visit us. My wife and I get take-out from Zarda fairly often
because it's nearby, but it's also good value for the money. There are a
couple other Zardas around but I can't remember where they are.

* Smokehouse BBQ

Looks like a nondescript restaurant, but the food is amazing. There is one at
the perpetually-under-construction intersection of Quivira and Shawnee
Mission Parkway in Shawnee, and there is one in Independence too, I think.

* K&M's BBQ

You really have to be willing to drive for this one; it's clear down in Spring
Hill. But the food is good, plentiful, and cheap. And there's an ice cream
shop next door.

* Big Bubba's BBQ

There are a couple of locations for this one, but the one I know is at 151st
and Mur-Len in Olathe. The food is good and the lunch specials are
affordable.

Hmmm. Does anyone know of any good authoritative sources of information about
BBQ in Kansas City? I know the Star magazine does a BBQ issue every June,
and a couple years ago they published a map showing all the BBQ restaurants
they knew of (it numbered in the high 80s), but last year's didn't have the
map.

Duh, I know...how about asking Google? :-) I found this excellent page that
rates a whole bunch of local joints:

http://old.jccc.net/~rmoehrin/gas.htm

Also this one, which has a bunch of links for how to become a BBQ master
yourself:

You're probably already in town and thus unable to read this message, but
you'll be back when you make the move. :-)

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of
public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree
which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or
inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the
Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should
be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it
is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him
when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both
base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the
President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is
not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the
American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any
one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or
unpleasant, about him than about any one else."
