Oh, that's not all.  That's the basic system.  Stage 2 and 3 have more
prebuilt stuff to begin with.  Gentoo fetches tarballs from mirrors or the
author's web sites (whatever is fastest) as it builds itself.

These tarballs are to be unpacked and you can chroot into them so they can
be your current environment as they are a complete linux environment.  
>From there, it builds itself into the creation of your desires.  For
example, if you want a fancy desktop with evolution, just type "emerge
evolution" and everything including the kitchen sink will be built to make
it happen.  It will install X, everything else it needs, and possibly
require configuration before running. That's about it.
