Actually, MS may not have all that money.  Consider that a major part of their 
compensation package to their employees is in the form of options to purchase 
stock from the company.  If it looks like MS stock is going to fall, those 
employees might decide to exercise those options and resell the stock on the 
market which would cause the stock price to crash.  Think Enron.  Imagine the 
effect on all the pension funds, mutual funds, etc. that are heavily invested 
in the supposedly safe MS stocks and it's not hard to see lawsuits and other 
nasty stuff.  The really bad thing is that the stock options are not required 
to be reported to the SEC, so outside investors can't know how much their 
ownership of MS stock might be diluted.
