If you are having errors with several different CD drives at random
places and also errors w/ dev/hda it is very possible that you have a
bad IDE controller on the motherboard. To rule this out you should try
known good and working hardware (HDD,CD, motherboard). This is not
really something that can be troubleshot over email, even with error
messages. If you need help bring the box to the next meeting, let me
know that you are going to do so and I will bring known good hardware
(HDD, CD, NIC, video card, etc.). Right now my hand is all bandaged up,
but I could direct you w/ the screwdriver.

I thought I had a bad burn on Redhat 9, but it turned out I had a bad CD
drive in my new webserver. Swapped it out and it worked fine. I burnt
a new copy of disk one for no good reason. If you got some of this
hardware off the junk pile, as some of us are wont to do, you can expect
some problems like this. You must have patience grasshopper, for the
flesh is weak and the hardware sometimes flakey.
